Does Your Espresso Machine Fit the Kitchen—or Just the Worktop?

Check an espresso machine’s working space before ordering. Rehearse hopper access, water refilling, portafilter preparation, milk steaming and cleaning to see whether the proposed position suits your everyday kitchen.

To check whether an espresso machine fits your kitchen, measure more than its footprint: you also need access to the bean hopper and water tank, room to prepare the portafilter, and space to use the steam wand and remove the drip tray. A machine can fit beneath a cabinet yet still be awkward to refill or clean.

What to Measure Before You Buy

Start with the dimensions and installation clearances for the exact model. Mark its footprint on the worktop, then check the access points below.

Area What to Check
Above the machine Can you open the hopper and pour beans? If the water tank lifts upwards, can you remove it beneath the cabinet?
Beside the machine Can the steam wand move into position with your milk jug underneath it? Is there a stable surface for preparing and tamping the portafilter?
In front of the machine Can you lock in the portafilter and pull out the drip tray without moving other appliances?
Under the group head Will your usual cup fit, including a separate espresso scale if you use one?
Behind the machine Is there room for the cable and any connections, while maintaining the manufacturer's required clearance?

Do not assume a small gap above the closed machine is enough. The lid-opening and tank-removal space may determine whether a position works.

Three Placements Worth Checking Carefully

Under a Wall Cabinet

Check access to both beans and water. Being able to refill the tank with a jug does not solve the problem if you cannot remove it for cleaning. Follow the manufacturer's guidance on overhead clearance and steam exposure.

In a Corner

A corner may leave enough room for the machine but restrict the steam wand or your hand around the jug. Check which side the wand is on and whether you can see the milk surface while steaming.

On a Narrow Worktop

Confirm that the machine's feet sit fully on a stable surface. Then check the portafilter handle and drip-tray removal path. A machine that uses nearly the entire worktop depth may leave little room for preparation or cleanup.

Does an Integrated Grinder Save Enough Space?

An integrated grinder removes the need to position a separate grinder. Built-in scales can also reduce separate equipment, but neither feature removes the need for tamping, milk preparation or collecting used grounds.

When comparing the Meraki espresso machine with a separate machine-and-grinder setup, compare the complete arrangement: both appliances, essential tools and the surfaces needed to use them. A single unit may simplify the layout; separate units offer more flexibility in where each component sits.

For milk drinks, check the cup and jug positions together. The space needed for brewing and steaming together matters more than the number of appliances on the counter.

A Quick Check Before Ordering

With the footprint marked, put your cup, milk jug and tamping mat in their intended positions. Check that you can prepare coffee, reach the water tank and remove the drip tray while leaving everyday kitchen items in place.

If routine refilling or cleaning requires moving the machine, reconsider the position before buying. Easy access also makes the daily cleaning routine easier to maintain.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much clearance does an espresso machine need?

Use the manufacturer's specified clearances for the exact model. Allow additional working space wherever lids, tanks, the steam wand or removable trays need to move. There is no universal clearance suitable for every machine.

What if the product dimensions do not show the space needed to remove the tank?

Ask the manufacturer for the tank-removal height or a demonstration before ordering. The machine's overall height alone will not answer that question.

Should I measure with my cup and scale together?

Yes, if you plan to use a separate scale beneath the cup. Check the combined height and whether both sit securely on the drip tray.
