Espresso Machine Not Working? Check These Symptoms First

Espresso machine not working as expected? Use the symptom checklist to check power, water flow, grind, steam and leaks. Start with safe owner checks, then see which warning signs mean it is time to stop using the machine and contact support.

If your espresso machine is not working, identify the symptom before changing settings. Check the power supply, water tank, ready indicator and any cleaning alert first. If a breaker trips, the cord is damaged, there is an electrical smell or water leaks from inside the machine, unplug it and request service. The checks below help separate a brewing problem from a machine fault without opening the housing.

Espresso machine troubleshooting at a glance

Symptom First safe check Stop and seek support if
No power or heat Check the plug, socket, ready indicator and household breaker once. The breaker trips again, the cord is damaged or the machine smells electrical.
No water or very little flow Fill and reseat the tank; check for a cleaning alert and an obstructed basket. The pump sounds unusual, there is an internal leak or flow does not recover.
Shot runs too quickly Check the dose and try a slightly finer grind. Flow remains abnormal after normal recipe adjustments and approved cleaning.
Shot barely flows Check for an overfilled basket and try a slightly coarser grind. Pressure or flow behaves abnormally even with the basket removed.
Weak steam Wait for the ready state, then purge and wipe the wand. Steam remains absent after the approved owner checks.
Water around the machine Identify whether it came from the tank, tray or portafilter area. Water appears inside the case or near electrical parts.

Why will the machine not turn on or heat up?

Check that the plug is firmly seated and the socket works with another appliance. Look at the household breaker once; if it trips again, stop. Follow the machine's start-up and ready indicators rather than repeatedly switching it off and on. Never remove the outer panels to inspect electrical components.

The Meraki EU FAQ gives an approximate three-minute heat-up time for the 220–240V version. Treat that as a reference, not a reason to ignore an error message. If a Meraki machine does not reach its ready state, note the message shown on screen and contact support.

Why is there no water coming through the group?

Check the reservoir level and reseat the tank. If your machine has a water filter or a removable tank valve, inspect only the owner-accessible parts described in its manual. Look for a cleaning alert and check whether coffee has blocked the basket. A fine grind or excessive dose can also choke a shot even when the water system is working.

If water flows without coffee but barely passes through a prepared basket, start with the recipe. If there is still no flow during an approved check, the pump sounds abnormal, or water appears inside the machine, stop and seek support. Do not run a succession of dry pump cycles or open the case.

Why is the espresso coming out too fast or too slowly?

A fast, pale shot often means water passes through the coffee bed with too little resistance. Confirm the basket's intended dose, then move the grinder slightly finer and compare the next shot. A very slow or stalled shot may improve with a slightly coarser grind or a lower dose. Change one variable at a time so you know what made the difference.

Measure the ground coffee and espresso in grams if you can. A 1:2 coffee-to-beverage ratio can be a useful starting point, but bean choice and taste determine the final recipe. The step-by-step espresso guide covers dose, yield and extraction in more detail. If the machine heats and water flows normally, an unsatisfying cup is usually worth troubleshooting as a recipe issue first.

What if the grinder is not dosing normally?

Check that beans are present and the hopper is seated as the manual directs. A change in bean type, roast or humidity can affect how the coffee moves through the grinder. Brush away loose grounds from accessible dry areas only; keep moisture out of the burr chamber.

On a Meraki Espresso Machine, the integrated grinder and grind-by-weight scale help you compare the selected dose with what is delivered. If the grinder stalls, makes a scraping sound or repeatedly shows an error, stop using it and contact support. Do not force the grind adjustment or dismantle a burr assembly without the model's instructions.

What does low or changing pressure mean?

Read pressure alongside flow, dose and grind. A fast shot and a slow shot can show different behaviour without indicating a broken pump. Check whether the basket is too full or the grind has shifted before assuming the machine needs descaling.

Meraki's main extraction pressure is designed around 9 bar, while pre-infusion wets the puck before the full-pressure stage. Pre-infusion duration is adjustable; this does not mean the machine offers selectable 3-bar or 4-bar pre-infusion pressure settings. If the machine cannot build or release pressure normally after the permitted checks, request service.

Why is the steam wand weak or sputtering?

Wait until the machine indicates it is ready to steam. Purge the wand using its normal control and wipe away visible milk residue. If the tip has removable parts, use only the cleaning method described for your model. Keep clear of hot steam and do not poke an improvised wire into a blocked opening.

If steaming remains weak after approved cleaning, contact support. A weak wand is not enough evidence to run a descaling solution through the steam system. Cleaning and descaling have different jobs and may follow different internal paths.

Where is the leak coming from?

Check whether the water is in the drip tray, beneath a poorly seated reservoir, or around the portafilter during brewing. Empty the tray, reseat the tank and clean stray grounds from the basket rim and accessible group area. Some water reaching the tray can be normal for a particular machine; use the manual to understand what to expect.

Unplug the machine if water comes from inside the housing, reaches electrical parts or continues after the accessible parts have been checked. Do not tighten internal hoses or remove panels yourself.

When should you clean, descale or request service?

Clean visible coffee and milk residue as part of routine care. Follow the current manual and the machine's cleaning prompts for internal programmes. Water hardness, filtration and usage influence scale risk; there is no reliable descaling calendar that covers every European home.

The companion espresso machine cleaning guide covers the portafilter, group, steam wand, backflushing and the difference between cleaning and descaling. Use only products and procedures approved for your model. The Meraki EU FAQ also explains how to request repair support.

Stop using the machine and seek qualified help for repeated breaker trips, electrical smells, a damaged cord, an internal leak, persistent heating errors, an unusual pump or grinder noise, or failure to brew after the approved basic checks. Record the model, any on-screen message and what happened immediately before the problem. Those details help support narrow down the cause.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my espresso machine running but not brewing?

Reseat and fill the water tank, check the basket and look for a cleaning alert. If the machine moves water without coffee but not through a filled basket, check dose and grind. If no water flows during the approved check, seek support.

Should I descale when coffee flows slowly?

Not automatically. First check dose, grind, the basket and the machine's cleaning guidance. Descale only according to the procedure approved for your model and water conditions.

Can I repair an internal leak myself?

No. Unplug the machine and request qualified service. Owner checks should stay with accessible parts such as the water tank, tray and portafilter area.

What if the machine works but the coffee tastes sour or bitter?

Check bean freshness, dose, grind and beverage yield before assuming a hardware fault. Adjust one brewing variable at a time and compare the result.
